Friedrich Gauermann, the most popular painter of the Biedermeier age, was of all his fellow artists, including Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, the painter who dealt most intensively with nature in its most original manifestations. He was born on 20 September 1807 in Miesenbach in Lower Austria. His father, the artist and copper engraver Jakob Gauermann, was his first teacher.
