There have been many problems recently whereby sellers could not get their money out of Moneybookers. Another crisis may appear to be coming whereby buyers cannot get their money into Moneybookers. However, if we all keep calm, there is no need for alarm.

I recently received an email, allegedly from Moneybookers, claiming that a password would be needed to upload money with a Switch card in future, but it didn’t tell me how to get the password, and some aspects of the email made it seem like phishing, in particular it was written in somewhat incorrect English. When I contacted Moneybookers about this, they assured me that it was genuine, but their emails were also badly written and I had great difficulty finding out how to get this password, in fact they never told me and now seem to deny what I have discovered.

In fact, if you try to use a Switch card now, you are immediately directed to a web page where you can set up a password immediately. Moneybookers have frequently insisted to me that I need to contact my bank for the password, but that it WRONG (or at least unnecessary, at least in routine cases like mine).

I hope this might save people some concern and a lot of trouble. I can only comment of my experience with Moneybookers that it must be very difficult and frustrating for people whose first language is French or anything else. Also, if you just reply to their emails, you may notice afterwards (or may not) that your email has gone to a “no reply” address, that is “pas de réponse”, “keine Antwort”, and that is why you don’t get a reply. This may explain some of the dissatisfaction reported by French delcampers and others.
